Let's Talk About A Different Rob!

That's right Mr. Pattinson, you aren't the ONLY Rob in the sea. There are others out there, and since I was made to feel yesterday like I was caught up on an episode of "Cheaters" being shown blurry pictures of your trysts behind my back and forced to accept that I must share you then turnabout is foreplay and guess what, Mr. Pattinson...it is high time you learn that YOU must also share ME!!!

So let's talk about a different Rob, and let me preface by saying, (to Mr. Pattinson) spare me any comments about what this reveals about my taste. I'll be the one providing the sarcasm today, spank you very much.

So this Rob we will pay some tribute to for a change...allow me to give him a glowing introduction...

He's...
a talented musician
a Grammy winner
a great songwriter
written several chart-topping songs
He...
sings and plays piano
sells out stadiums
has a rough, yet melodic, voice
sings solo, duets, and performs with his band

This Rob...
actually has a record contract

He...
gets to go on tour

He's...
been honest and open in interviews
professed his love to his girl in front of the world on national tv

He also
knows how to work a set of pretty pupils!

He's Rob Thomas!!!

White linen shirt? Works for me!!!

So here's the thing about Rob Thomas...I kind of love him and his love story!

He gives a great interview. This is one of many. But I love what he says about how listening to his songs or singing them he gets back to how the songs meant something to him at the time they were written.

When I first heard that song "Push" from Matchbox Twenty back in 1997 (and boy were the mid 90s A GREAT TIME to be in your early twenties and not entering junior high!) I was like, "Man, is this guy angry! Is this supposed to match the aggression of  Alanis' 'You Oughta Know?'" If so, I was so not happy by the chauvinistic implications of the song.

If I wanna push you around, well I will.
If I wanna take you for granted, I will.

I remember thinking how insane is this guy that he's talking about being such an asshole??? I wasn't an immediate fan of the group. Then their next song came out "3 am." He was still looking all angry in this video and sporting a pissed off attitude, but the melody was catchy and the song did really well. You just couldn't get away from it on the radio.

Then, Rob fell in love with a model named Marisol.

I caught an interview he did on a radio station about how he wrote, "If You're Gone." I'm paraphrasing here based on a shoddy memory (yes, Mr. Pattinson some of us have shoddy memories, though I think most of us would remember who we were whispering sweet nothings to for the last too many months when asked about it in interviews. I can blame it on age, mommy-induced ADD, or how I forgot to take a prescribed medication--I'm hoping your explanation is a bit more spectacular than that.). He had described what a whirlwind romance he had developed and then spent a weekend of fighting and ended up writing this song. When he played it to the guys in the band they were like, "So you guys broke up?" And Rob said, "No guys I said if, if! Listen to the lyrics I said if you're gone." I think that is when he realized he wanted to marry her, even. And you have to love how vulnerable his lyrics are in this song.

I think I've already lost you
I think you're already gone
I think I'm finally scared now

These are the kind of lyrics that would come straight out of the thoughts of one of our favorite fanfictionWards, no?

So after that interview, I was hooked. I decided he was just a really emotional guy and that first song that I originally didn't like, "Push" I gave a listen to again with new ears and decided that if you understand the lyrics not in the chorus, you see a Rob that is just frustrated with his situation--so frustrated that he doesn't know how to deal with it so like all our favorite emo-musicians he put it down in words and sang the hell out of it!
(It may have been the musical equivalent of wearing a t-shirt that reads 'Get Off My Dick.')
Then, I watched him get married on one of those weddings to the stars shows and it was beautiful. They were happy and he was all enamored with his wife. His wife is Spanish, and she encouraged him to write the song "Smooth" that he performed with Santana...THAT was a great summer song, though slightly overplayed.

But Rob Thomas, because I've gotten that glimpse into the honesty that you put into your lyrics...your last two songs have me all tied up in knots!

I absolutely love Someday. I love the dreamy quality to the opening interlude. Each time I hear it on the radio it reminds me of a fanfiction story I would like to work on, someday.

You can go, you can start all over again
You could try to make another day go by
You can hide, hold all your feelings inside
You can try to carry on when all you want to do is cry

And maybe someday we'll figure all this out
Try to put an end to all this doubt
And try to find a way to make things better now
Maybe someday we'll live our lives out loud
We'll be better off somehow, someday

So as much as I love this song, it got me thinking what is going on with his marriage? It sounds like another plea similar to, "If You're Gone" and it also sounds like there is hope that they can work things out.

But maybe I'm reading too much into it.

Okay maybe it isn't about their marriage specifically. Maybe it's a message of hope to the world as per the suggestion in the video. Looks like it was filmed in NYC--possibly a message of hope for us post-9/11? Maybe it should have been the title song for "Remember Me." You can hear the song and see it's uplifting video here.

But now his new song is out, "Mockingbird." And it has lyrics in it like this:

Maybe you and me got lost somewhere
We cant move on and we can stay here
Maybe we've just had enough
Well maybe we aint meant for this love
You and me tried everything
But still that mockingbird wont sing
Man this life seems enough
Well maybe we aint meant for this love

I heard this song of the first time, and my heart was breaking for them!!! What is going on??? The lyrics in this one sound super personal. If they are pertaining to his marriage, then I really hope that he and Marisol can work things out and get everything back on track. In fact, I hope this doesn't pertain to their marriage at all and it was a song he wrote for a movie or inspired by something else he saw or anything other than a reflection of his feelings.

Hey! Now there's an idea. Maybe Rob Thomas, a grammy-award winning musician, could write a cool love song for Breaking Dawn. I bet it would be a phenomenal hit!!! I had hopes for you, Mr. Pattinson, to pen a song for the next movie, but we all know your time will be limited what with filming and dodging questions and all. I know you are on a little break now, but again, you seem to be preoccupied. Hey here's an idea, write one and then ask your friend Lee MacDougall to sing it...oh wait, you've done that already.

Really random thought here...but you know what just popped into my head? One of the greatest FRIENDs lines ever!!! (No, not 'We were on a break!') But during that break...remember when the group got stranded trying to go on that ski trip and Ross had to be pick them up and Ross askes something of Rachel and she says to him,

"I'm sorry. Were you talking to me or sleeping with somebody else?"

Love. That. Line. Have no clue why that could have just popped into my head.

And now I present a fitting Rob Thomas song that goes out to one Mr. Pattinson on behalf of many. Today, my blog, Mr. Pattinson, is just a vehicle to communicate a little message to you.

(And by the way, I think Rob Thomas does an excellent job of running in this video, and I bet he didn't need any treadmill practice sessions. Oops, I think I'm channeling my inner Carlisle sarcasm.)

What is your favorite Rob Thomas or Matchbox Twenty song?
Tell me in the comments!

(Wow! I feel much better!)

Disclaimer: No copyright infringement intended with song lyrics. Don't ask me why I had a little twinge of jealouswardette surface from those pictures that I've been expecting for months now. They weren't anywhere as adorable as those the premiere pictures. So the twinge was a little irrational but so was the twinge I felt when I saw the Mr.Pattinson poster in FYE the other day. That Mr.Pattinson gets to thet dial on my heart that controls all emotions and just spins it all funny. If I could make sense out of any of this I probably wouldn't be here typing up this fabulous post. And again, I'm joking! Mostly. Anyway, I've taken my regular dose of Robsten-flavored Kool-Aid and I'm back! I'll be awaiting more from them, though. Like I've said, if it can't be hidden, then I want to know what sweet things he does. What was in that gift bag? Something he bought her? What kind of gifts does Rob buy her? What kind of boyfriend is he? Yes, I want to know these types of things more than I care to see grainy pictures.
