Exploring a Crush in Fanfiction

I'm wrapping up my crush theme with a post about fanfiction. I haven't read hundreds of fanfiction stories but I've noticed that some of my favorite ones tend to revolve around a teenage crush or short encounter between characters that comes to light years later when both characters have moved on with their lives but still carry a torch, still have a romanticized idea of someone, or are still left confused as to whether the feelings were one-sided. Perhaps Edward leaving Bella brokenhearted and her not truly understanding the real reason he left but instead assumed she wasn't good enough for him in New Moon is also a catalyst for these types of stories.

Based on the comments to last week's "Forever Crush" post, I'll assume we all have unrequited crushes or some confusing experiences from our teenage years that left us wondering "what if," "what happened," "did he feel the same way about me," or at the very least, "why does the thought of him still make me smile?" I can see my  "forever crush" in my memories smiling at me and it makes me ask ALL of these questions.

Yeah, his smile was as adorable as this!

So now that you know how Twilight opened up a can of crush worms for me you might not be surprised to learn that I keep falling in love with these fanfiction stories that are centered around a teenage crush that gets played out.

I would be interested to know how many fanfiction stories were written motivated by something that happened in the author's own life as a teenager. Wouldn't fanfiction be a safe place to explore a crush? Weren't you just as awestruck with your "forever crush" as Bella was with Edward? I would speculate that several fanfiction writers have drawn off some "crush" experience for the basis of some of these stories. Heck, if I wrote fanfiction, I'm pretty sure a character inspired by my "forever crush" would have a good part in it with, but I'm not sure if it would be a sweet reunion or a confrontation. But a fanfiction writer could use their story to answer the question of whether or not a reunion with the "forever crush" would turn out to solidify that said crush was "the one" or maybe the story would validate how much the "Bella" character has matured from those years and reassure her that her "forever crush" was just a part of the past.

Some other fanfiction stories that I am really enjoying that address a teenage crush or attempt to explain a confusing, crushing event from the teenage years are The Best Man by Bratty-Vamp, The Blessing and The Curse by The Black Arrow, and The Family Business by Suzspetals.

A huge thank you to you guys who have recommended  The University of Edward Masen by SebastienRobichaud (who by the way was kind enough to respond to my PM, not all fanfiction authors do) to me because not only am I in love with this story for the developing plot and lovestory but I'm also in awe of this author's smart and sophisticated writing style!

If you haven't read the story yet, then it is time to enroll in The University of Edward Masen. Forget the Dean's List, I want to be on Professor Masen's list. This story sings to me like Bella's blood sings to Edward, and thank goodness I have my own blog because I have a place to shout it from the bloggy-rooftops to anyone who is willing to listen!

I'll give you 5 6 awesome reasons to go read this story...NOW!!!

Ready?

6.  There is no Team Jacob to this story! YAY!!!  Oh Jacob's in it, but there's no rooting for him!

5. Chocolate cake is never as sinful as when it is being licked off your fingers by Professor Masen.

4.  Edgasms! (I'm pretty sure I don't have to explain this one!)

3.  Reading this story will be HIGHLY educational for you!
Not only does the author find ways to mimic so many of the original details of Twilight in this story but also weaves in several literary, artistic, and musical references throughout it that heavily enrich the story. The literary references are varied with the story drawing a lot of similarities from the classic writings of Dante but also makes references to more contemporary authors like Margaret Atwood (love her!). The author is nice enough to include links for the readers to look up and learn more about the references used, whether it is to see a piece of artwork, listen to a song, or to get more information about a piece of literature. Yes, reading is truly fundamental when you are enrolled at The University of Edward Masen!!!!

2.  This story has FOUR first kisses. Whuh...whuhh..What?  Yep! Four very different, but all wonderful in their own way, first kisses!!!

Sometimes the lemons in fanfiction tend to sound a bit repetitive, but the first kiss always varies from story to story so I always look forward to the dance the characters do and that intense buildup that leads to a declaration of mutual feelings and that "first kiss." But read enough fanfiction and you realize that a highly-anticipated first time meeting of the lips isn't always exclusive with the declaration of feelings between the characters. (Edward Wallbanger, anyone?)

It may sound confusing and definitely paradoxical but, IMO, the author manages to deliver FOUR different first kisses in this story. That's right, there are four different scenarios that I got all mushy-gushy over and had to go back to reread the passage and bask in the feeling of "the first kiss." Want to know how that could be? Read the story and come back and let me know if you understand. Or if you have already read the story, let me know in the comments if you felt the same way.

1.  One of the underlying components of this story is the explanation and exploration of my above-mentioned "crush questions." And that's all I'm going to say because I don't want to give anything away but the role of "the crush" in this story is so amazingly powerful and wonderful to a romantic, sappy reader like me.

Want a sneak peak to the story? Here's a video made by the soon-to-be-a-published-author, multi-talented Eila (you can read her interview here for her story "Random Angels"). Check it out!

I sincerely hope everyone enjoyed the "crush" theme as much as I have these past two weeks! Thank you again everyone for sharing your stories!

Next week I have a new interview with Jelena from Twiholic about her fanfiction story, The Canvas. It's going to be a good one, and maybe we can ask her if her story was at all inspired by a real life crush. Even if it wasn't, the "crush" theme definitely is apparent in Chapter 2 where I audibly gasped out loud while reading the story.

So any other fanfiction stories you can recommend where a reunion with a "crush" was an important part of the story?

Have you written a fanfiction story and want to admit to a crush having inspired the basis for the story? I'd love to hear all about that!

Tell me in the comments!

Have a great weekend!
